The Qur’an is a complete book related to life without any lacking. The Qur’an is one of the blessings of God because it explains everything. Allah says the Quran contains information about every aspect of life for the guidance of mankind.
So, interpretation of the Qur’an is of great importance in contemplating and understanding the Qur’an word by word.
Meaning of Tafseer:
The word Tafseer is derived from the root ‘Fassar’ which means to clarify or to explain. This contextually refers to clarification of the meaning of the Qur’an.
Tafseer is the correct understanding of Qur’anic passages, which includes Arabic syntax, grammar, literature, and Qur’anic sciences.
Tafseer al-Qur’an:
Tafseer al-Qur’an involves the interpretation and explanation of the meanings of the verses of the Qur’an.
In Arabic Mufassir is a person who has a thorough understanding of Islam and the Holy Qur’an. Mufassir is a blessed person in Islam because his comprehensive study of the Qur’an allows him to interpret or translate Allah’s message.
Importance of Tafseer al-Qur’an:
For a proper understanding of the Qur’an, Tafseer is essential. The Straight Path can be found just by the Qur’an and it is possible only if one has a complete understanding of it. People trained in the Qur’an Tafseer will be able to better understand a verse’s intent and be able to derive rulings from it than the average believer.
It is impossible to interpret the Qur’an without understanding Tafseer. The purpose of Tafseer is to explain to mankind what Allah has revealed to them in the Holy Book.
Different Types of Tafseer:
The first: Tafseer bil-Ma’thur (or Tafsir bi-Riwayah) received interpretation.
The second: is Tafsir bi-Ra’y (or Tafseer bi’d-dirayah) opinion.
Tafseer bi’l-Ma’thur (or Tafsir bi’r-Riwayah) :
It is intended to interpret the Qur’an depending on what came in the Qur’an itself, the
Sunnah, or the words of the Companions.
The Qur’an in this type of Tafseer is:
- Explained by the Qur’an itself (for instance explaining one verse by referring to another verse).
- Explained by the means of the Sunnah.
- Explained through the statement of the Sahaba, the companions of Prophet Muhammed (PBUH).
Tafseer of the Qur’an by the Qur’an:
No doubt, the Qur’an itself is the very first source of Tafseer. Allah is the best one to declare the aim and the meaning of what He had said.
Question on Delayed Punishment:
“And they urge you to hasten the punishment. But Allah will never fail in His promise. And indeed, a day with your Lord is like a thousand years of those which you count.” (Qur’an 22:47)
Answer to the Question:
“And never think that Allah is unaware of what the wrongdoers do. He only delays them for a Day when eyes will stare [in horror].” (Qur’an 14:42)
This provides insight into the divine wisdom behind delaying punishment, as Allah’s awareness of the wrongdoers’ actions is coupled with a day of accountability.
Tafseer of the Qur’an by the Sunnah:
Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) received revelation from Allah. He clarified the Qur’an and taught Muslims how to practice its teachings the right way.
For example, he (PBUH) clarified the verse “Establish Prayer” by teaching Muslims how to perform prayer as Allah taught him.
He (PBUH) said: “Pray as you have seen me perform prayer”.
Tafseer The Qur’an by Sahaba Sayings:
Allah Almighty said:” When Allah’s ‘ultimate’ help comes and the victory over Mecca is achieved” (An-Nasr:1)
The Companion of the Holy Prophet, Ibn Abbas’ interpretation of the Almighty’s saying:” When Allah’s ‘ultimate’ help comes and the victory over Mecca is achieved”
Where he interpreted this verse as approaching the death of the Messenger of Allah, may blessings and peace be upon him and his family.
Tafsir bi-Ra’y (Opinion-based Tafseer)
It is the interpretation of the Qur’an with diligence. While still rooted in traditional sources, this approach may incorporate scholarly opinions and analogical reasoning (qiyas) to interpret Quranic verses. However, it does so cautiously and within the framework of Islamic jurisprudence.
So, proper scholarly opinion under islamic framework is important.
